Pant Progress

This has been an interesting project for me.  I hardly give up on a sewing project; there has been a few though when I truly knew the outcome would not be wearable.  I have been close to giving up on this pant fitting journey I am on. I realized yesterday after putting on and taking off and repeating this action at least five times that I am actually learning more about fitting pants and decided to not talk myself out of continuing.

I am happy and actually amazed at the fit of the back of the pants with some tweaks for fullness in the back below my bottom/butt/bum.  This pattern has a side back and back pieces. This has allowed for a nicer fit in that area and without this, I would be folding out quite a bit of fullness. There is still fullness that I want to remove.

It was hard taking photos of the back as my DH was not readily available to help.  I lightened the photo so you could see what I am working with at this time.

The front is another fitting issue nightmare!  Actually, this is a fitting issue I have with some petite pants purchased from other sources than Talbots. I had a tailor I went to for them to fix the issue; I wish I had paid more attention to what they did.   I really am more of a box shape and I have way too much curve through the hip area. I basted a deeper side seam using a 1.5-inch side seam for the front piece and 1 inch for the back side seam.  That helped but still have more to remove. I also took in the inseam by an additional 1/2 inch.

I can see the fullness at the hip and I need to remove some curviness there.

There is a diagonal pull that I am pointing to on this side.

And too much fullness near center front.  It looks like a bubble and per Pants for Real People, taking deeper inseam should help. I had to raise the front waistline, or that is what I thought I should do because of how low the front crotch seemed to be.  This made the front look a little better but have the issues above still.

I won't have as much to time to work on this today and regret that.  I am wanting this project to be over and the next project will probably be a quick TNT project just for immediate gratification.

Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Just stopping by to offer sympathy and encouragement. This is one area of sewing where the amount of advice available is just overwhelming, IMHO, and one expert's instructions may send you in the opposite direction from another. I did my "year of the pants" back in 2013 or so and it did take just about a year to get a trouser and a jean pattern that I felt happy with. Notice I didn't say they fit absolutely perfectly, just that I was happy with them. I still wear several of the pants I made at that time, and I still use the patterns I made, with slight adjustments for weight gain. So it was definitely worth the frustration at the time. Please don't give up when you're so close!

    1. Katrina, thank you for your comments and encouragement. I keep thinking if I can make skirts that fit, you should be able to make pants that fit. Yet there is a lot to pants fitting than skirts. I plan to push on through. I also agree that there are a lot of "how to's" with pants and each is different in some cases. It is definitely a learning experience.

  3. I admire that you are continuing to push through! You are still headed in a good direction, and I hope you get to finish the fitting process soon.

  4. I'm glad that you are pushing through and continuing on your pants fitting! It is frustrating for sure, but once you get your fit figured out, the reward is huge. You will never want to buy pants again because your own will fit you so much better. I wish I had advice to give you and my own fitting has just been trial and error. Like you, putting on, pulling off, tweaking, and then over again till I like what I see. However, what I keep in mind is not be too hard or critical on myself. Making our own clothes means we are/will achieve a better fit than what we could buy. I always remind myself too that if it is not "perfect," that is okay too because it's pretty safe to say that whatever I buy is a far cry from a perfect fit either. :)

    1. Thanks Shirley! I knew that this would be challenging and I am learning a lot about fitting pants. I plan to get a good fit, may not be perfect but something that is wearable. I agree that what I make is a better fit most of the time than what I buy.
