What's next?

As a member of the Sew a Garment A Month group on Facebook, August idea was to select three patterns from stash and then narrow this down to one.  Being a person who normally deviates from rules from time to time, I pulled five pants patterns, most recently purchased-meaning purchased this year-and read through some of the instructions with two of them.  I then proceeded to go a totally different route and decided to make a denim dress using this McCall's pattern.

I have had this fabric in stash only for a short period of time.  I purchased the same time that I bought a stretch denim from JoAnn's to make a trial version of the Jalie Eleanor pull on jeans earlier this year.

I have cut around the pattern pieces and will do pin fitting later.

I continue to avoid sewing pants.  It just feels like a hassle.  And for me probably a lot of fiddling with the fit.  I am short in length from waist to hip, not the normal 7-9 inches below the waist.  I now have a flatter rear, when it once was very round.  I have a tummy pouch. My front and back have changed positions. 🙁  I can buy pants from Talbots Petites and they fit very well with a few exceptions.  They can be pricey as well, yet they hold up well with a lot of wearing so I do think I get my money's worth.

Still I need to put to use all the Craftsy lessons on pant fitting I have watched.

More later!

  1. I just made the Jalie Eleanor pattern and cut it shorter to make shorts with a 9 inch inseam. I had to add an inch to the back so when I sit they still cover my backside, but other than that, they are wonderful. 30 years ago, I was a perfect size 14 in a pattern, now, after 3 kids, my body is very different...and most of the big 4 patterns require so much in the way of alterations that I don't even want to bother. I am loving the Jalie patterns- good luck with the pants.

    1. I can remember when i use to cut out a pattern straight from the envelope and sewed it. Fit was good, then one day-or years-I got older and body changes definitely followed. Thanks Barb. I still need to tweak my Eleanor pair, but was more pleased with them than I thought I would be.

  2. You follow the same sort of pattern selection process as me! Whatever works! As for pants, an excellent book for fitting mature bodies into pants: Pants for Real People, by Pati Palmer and Maria Alto. However, there is no rule that says you have to make everything, just because you sew. If you have found a RTW pant that fits, wear it! I haven't, so I have to make mine. I have the same sort of waist/hip problem as you.

    1. I have that book and just keep procrastinating. Talbot's is having a sale this weekend so I will take advantage and purchase a few more pairs of pants at better prices.
