No you didn't, Yes I did!

Many of you know that my favorite process for fitting is the Palmer Pletsch Fit for Real People pin fitting method.  I have only made a few muslins in all the years (a lot) of sewing.  Many of you know that I recently posted that I have a real block when it comes to making pants or shorts.

I took the RTW Fasters 2018 Pledge which was I will not buy any RTW garments for 2018.  I have stuck to that commitment, though have been tempted several times to buy some shorts.  Soooooo- I purchased the Landers Pants and Shorts pattern from True Bias.  After printing, taping and tracing I tried pin fitting as usual and just couldn't get that to work for me.  So I decided to make a muslin, oh yes I did!

I can better see my issues by doing this but I am still having concerns about what I think I am seeing.  So dear readers, I am bravely posting some photos that DH took so I could better see what may be the issues.  I truly appreciate your feedback.  I will comment about what I see both in my bathroom mirror (the one photo I took) and what I see from the photos.

Hopefully, if you click the photo you can see the comments.  The front overlaps do not meet at the front so I know I need more room there.  There is pulling on the left side and puffy on right.  My right hip issue is more pronounced in this shot.

I know I want to taper in the side seams below the hip to take out some fullness.  This pattern has one-inch side seams to allow for fitting-yeah! This is the left side.

This is the right side seam. I do have gaping in the center back at the waistband and the waistband stands out from my back.  I think that I need to take a deeper back seam or take in darts at waist?

I have real issues with my right hip. Osteo issues as well as bursitis; I see more differences between left and right in this photo.

I truly appreciate feedback about whether I am on the right track or could there be other fitting concerns.  I will conquer the short/pant fitting. If you want to send me an email with more details please send to lwl1951 at gmail dot com.  Thank you for your responses!

  1. How I wish I could help! I have the same story--on the RTW fast challenge, and always come to a block with pants. I started a pants block via Craftsy, got to a certain point, and put it aside. I think you are headed in the right direction, and if you can endure all the little tweaks it takes to get to a great fit, you can sew some lovely shorts. Do you have Fit for Real People--pants? That is such a good resource. I look forward to seeing what you will do!

    1. Thanks Vanessa for commenting. I have the Craftsy video for the pants for FFRP. I have watched it but it has been awhile. Good reminder for me and will look at it again! Maybe we both will get a good fit one day.

  2. You know from ALL my post about pants fitting issues that I am in the very same spot as you with this. But it always amazes me that when I see pictures such as the one you posted here that I THINK I know the answers. But I am always questioning myself and going back and forth, so please take what I am typing here with a grain of salt. I think you are right about needing a small sway back adjustment, and taking in a wedge at the center back waist. I think the pulling at the upper hip area of the side seam would be alleviated by letting out the side seam a tad on both sides, and that will probably add the amount you need at the center front as well. Again, take this with a grain of salt. I think you are doing a marvelous job with these. The Lander pants are high on my list to see as well.

    1. Thank you for your feedback. I am doing the same thing, questioning if this will fix that, and will that fix this. I do agree with your suggestions as I was thinking something similar; my lack of real experience sewing pants/shorts made me truly question what adjustments to make and will that create another adjustment. We shall see! Thanks again for commenting.

  3. It looks like you need more crotch length at the front to me. The waistband is sitting below the waist, so a curved yoke will fit better than a straight band.

  4. I took the Lander pattern out, looked at it, and folded it back up. I don't like it...and after checking out a bunch of reviews...a lot of people SAY they like them, but a lot of people have a really poor fit in the front crotch. I feel like something is off there but don't have the pattern drafting/fitting knowledge to fix it. I'm curious to see how it works out for you!!!

    1. Part of the reason for buying was reviews seem good. I made some changes that I thought were needed and that created other issues. I am going to search for another short/pant pattern to try.

    2. I would totally give a Big4 pattern a shot. One of the Simplicity amazing fit (1st pattern I got to work for me was S2700). Or a Tilton pattern or Lisette for Butterick.

    3. I have decided to give a Big 4 a shot. I will check out the Simplicity one also.

  5. Alexandra Morgan is doing a free video series for fitting pants that might be useful: https://www.inhousepatternsstudio.com/blog

I always learn something new from her.
