Continued Chaos

I have hit another brick wall with my sewing room setup.  I have WAY TOO  much fabric, patterns, etc. for the space.  Now looking into shelving to go up toward ceiling.

We still have boxes to unpack and somewhere in some box are my scissors, rotary cutters, and more.  When the movers were unloading the truck I thought I caught all of the boxes marked sewing.  Obviously not as there are more boxes unfortunately two boxes deep to get to at the moment.

With the room in chaos at this time, I could not cut out anything if I found said scissors.  I was going to post a picture of how it looks now and realized that I have not yet found my camera.  I have the camera stand, not the camera!!!!

Years ago I would not have let the movers pack and move my sewing machines and essential sewing items.  This time I did let them move the sewing room and for the big things such as machines and serger, plus sewing and cutting table, all made it without damage.

Hopefully soon all will be my "normal" again.  Meanwhile I am sewing vicariously by reading other sewist blogs and pattern review.  For once I am not taking advantage of fabric sales for the holiday weekend; more fabric than space now.

Updates to follow...........

  1. May I suggest thinking twice about the shelves to the ceiling? At least on whole walls... I did that, and it was great. Until they filled up. And then over-filled. Besides looking a mess, it makes the room feel smaller. I know this house is smaller, have suitable alternative storage areas been claimed already? Like under bed, on hangers in the clothes closet, folded under chair and sofa cushions, and I know not the best for a few reasons - bins in the basement or attic... OTOH, maybe you may have a bit more discipline than I have had on not letting the shelves fill up and leave some "breathing" room.

    1. Thank you for your suggestions. I am coming up with some alternatives to the shelves on wall. Knowing how I am I would have stuff overflowing and looking messy. I am rethinking the use of one of the closets and have purchased a wardrobe storage thing to put fabrics in that has a cover of it. Still a work in progress.

  2. I just switched to a large shelved cupboard with doors. It can't be over stuffed like shelves. I am getting rid of some excess fabric to fellow sewists.

    1. My DH confiscated the shelved cupboard for his "stuff".

  3. It takes time, I downsized last year and I didn't realize how much fabric and patterns I had till I moved! My fabric is in clear totes with labels but I still manage to buy more....life of a sewing girl.

    1. I am actually overwhelmed with the patterns I have left. I donated abur 4 large garbage bags of patterns to Goodwill. I had bank boxes with patterns in them and yet when I started unpacking boxes from the move, I found even more. There is a good reason to buy PDF patterns and keep them stored on the computer. I have yet to give in to pattern or fabric sales, but know I will. Like you said a life a sewing girl!!!!

  4. I agree with Gail about the shelves to the ceiling. I have fabric to the ceiling and that fabric is always a pain to reach and use. Also, I understand skipping the fabric sales because I did too. Hopefully you will get your sewing room together soon, cause I know it helps with peace of mind.

    1. Actually Carolyn, I got the original idea about shelves from your move and blog posts. I have decided against the shelves for now. I am making progress on the sewing room set up. Post to follow.

  5. Oh,my, this is touching a nerve. Today is the day I finally got my new sewing space organized and set up well enough to finally sew after a whole year and a long drawn out move. I hear all of your pain. Trust me. It will come. DO NOT try to sew until you are organized and finished setting up your space. I promise, it will just upset you and that is despite knowing that what your mental health really needs is sewing. When the moment comes that you can sew in "peace" it will be worth it. I also got rid of huge amounts of fabric, etc. and once I got in my new space have continued to donate a lot. I want to enjoy the new space, not feel overwhelmed. A word of warning which you clearly know at this point. doing this is frustrating. Just when I'd get one shelf set up organized I'd open more boxes and have to rearrange everything again to accommodate all the newly found items. Open box, repeat, rearrange, repeat, again and again and again. Evenutally, today for me, it was all dealt with and sewable. It will happen for you. Have a glass of wine, relax, and then hit it again tomorrow. Sew when your space is ready, not while your are still unpacking. Good luck,Ruthie.

    1. I truly appreciate your comment; thank you for your feedback based on your experience!!! I have decided like you that I will not sew until the room is set up. I am finally making some progress. With DH off and out of the house to do his thing today, I plan to give more attention to setting up the space without interruption.
