I have hit a brick wall with the McCall's crossover v-neck top! I don't wear V-neck dresses or tops much, normally too low and just not flattering on me. Putting that aside I wanted to make this top-M7249.
I read Ann's review on PR and her post on her blog. Her dresses are lovely and she like me is shaped like a rectangle. From an earlier post I was using a lovely knit fabric from Fabric Mart and was a nice knit to work with. The issue was not the fabric but the dang v-neck and how the overlay attached at that area.
I sewed the heck out of that neckline trying to get dots lined and stitching to end where it would should until I ended up cutting a big honking hole at the neckline. I decided I will put this aside for now as the frustration with myself and the pattern is not getting me any closer to finishing this top.
So on to the next project and I don't know what I want to make. Perhaps I should say that I have several items I want to make I just am not feeling the vibe as to what single thing to make now.
Maybe after walking away from this project I can give it proper attention.

I'm sorry - this is always so disheartening, especially when you work hard to get the pattern to work. A nice cup of coffee, a break and then start again. Something nice will come to mind, I am sure. A good night's sleep helps too.

DeleteOh, no! Linda, I'm so sorry that you had trouble with this pattern. I was looking forward to seeing your version! It definitely is tricky to get a V centered just right. Whenever I do a V-neck- I will start at the center back and sew to the point. Then flip it over, and do the same from the other side of the center back to the point. I can't remember if that is different from the instructions or not, but if you haven't tried it that way, maybe that would help.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann! I think there is a better way to sew this overlay piece to the v-neck bodice. I just need to work it out and do a miniature of how I think it will work. I do plan to try this again.

ReplyDeleteI like them also but the way the overlay is sewn to bodice at v-neck just was not working for me. I plan to try it another way on a miniature model and see if what I think I can do will work better than the instructions.
DeleteCall me crazy, I do not like wrap front dresses on women with more than a B cup. The diagonal pleats draw the eye down and make the bust look even more matronly and wider and saggy. This pattern has even more pleats than normal and drops so far down past the waist and adds pounds. When starting a new pattern I ask myself, "what am I asking this fabric to do" and if it is close to the impossible like skimming over a large bust or tummy, then it is time to change direction. Ann can carry this off, not many can without that look of being strangled. Just a speed bump in the road, your next project will certainly bring you more joy!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback, I always like your comments whether agreeing or not. I think there will be a better pattern later. I think the pattern instrucitons for attaching the overlay to v-neck is lacking and I am sure there is a better way I just need to work on it. Until then I am on to something else.
